Live oaks from Saint Simons were used to make the USS Constitution AKA Old Ironside in 1812. It was the dense composition of our oaks that made the ship such a formidable foe. The Soldier is a cross-section of a live oak from Gascoigne Bluff genetically related to the same trees that were so integral in making our ships bigger, faster, and stronger
